The Best Scents for a Living Room (and How to Make It Last)
The living room is where everyone gathers, so its scent has to be welcoming, never heavy. Which notes work, where to place a diffuser, and how strong to go.
The living room is the most shared room in the house. Guests sit there, the family spends evenings there, and it often opens straight into the kitchen and hall. That makes it the room where scent should feel like comfort, never like a statement.
What a living room scent should feel like
- Warm, not heavy. Amber, sandalwood and soft musk feel like a well-kept room.
- Bright at the top. A touch of citrus or bergamot stops warm scents from feeling sleepy.
- Easy to share. It should sit well with cooking smells from the kitchen and the scent in your entryway.
Scents that work
Warm and bright: Ambre Safran opens with bergamot and jasmine and settles into ambergris, sandalwood and cedar. It is our favourite for living rooms.
Clean and calm: Thé Blanc suits bright, minimal rooms and homes with lots of white and natural light.
Deep and cosy: for colder months or darker rooms, Santal Vellum brings sandalwood, iris and soft leather.
Where to place a diffuser
- On a side table or shelf at sitting height, not on the floor and not high on a bookcase.
- Away from radiators, fireplaces and sunny windows, which make reeds evaporate too fast.
- Out of the main walkway, so it is not knocked over, and out of reach of pets.
How strong should it be?
In a medium living room, start with six to eight reeds and flip them once a week. In an open-plan space, use two diffusers on opposite sides, or consider a scent machine that can cover the whole floor.
Quick answers
What is the best scent for a living room? A warm, bright scent such as amber with bergamot and sandalwood, for example Ambre Safran. Clean white tea scents suit minimal rooms.
How many reeds should I use in a living room? Six to eight in a medium room. Add a second diffuser for open-plan spaces.
Should the living room match the rest of the house? It helps. Use the same or related scents in rooms that open into each other. See How to Scent Your Home, Room by Room.
Our signature scent: Thé Blanc, white tea, ginger and soft musk. It is the scent most guests ask about first, and the one we suggest when you are not sure where to begin.
