How Long Does a Reed Diffuser Last? (And How to Make It Last Longer)

A 200 ml reed diffuser usually lasts 60 to 90 days. Here's what makes it run out faster, and seven simple ways to make yours last longer.

The short answer: a good 200 ml reed diffuser lasts about 60 to 90 days, and a 100 ml travel size about 45 to 60 days. But the same diffuser can last twice as long in one home as in another. Here's why, and how to stretch yours.

What makes a reed diffuser run out faster

• Heat and sun. A diffuser on a sunny windowsill or next to a radiator evaporates much faster.
• Airflow. Near a heating vent, fan or open window, the scent is pulled out of the bottle.
• Too many reeds. More reeds means more scent, and a faster finish.
• Flipping too often. Every flip releases a burst of fragrance and uses up oil.
• Dry air. Canadian winters with the heating on dry the air and speed up evaporation.

7 ways to make it last longer

1. Keep it out of direct sun and away from vents and radiators.
2. Use fewer reeds in small rooms. Five or six is plenty for a bathroom.
3. Flip once a week, not every day.
4. Pick the right size for the room: a 100 ml travel diffuser for small rooms, 200 ml for living spaces.
5. Replace the reeds when you refill. Old reeds get clogged and stop wicking.
6. Use a quality base. Diffusers made with a clean, steady base release scent evenly instead of all at once.
7. Top up with a refill before the bottle is completely dry, so the reeds never dry out.
