How to Get Rid of Pet Smell in Your Home (Without Just Covering It Up)

A home with pets can smell fresh. The order that works: remove the source, clean the fabrics, move the air, and only then add a gentle scent.

You stop noticing your own home's smell within minutes, so pet smell often hides from the people who live with it. Guests notice it right away. The good news: it can be fixed, and the fix is mostly cleaning, not fragrance.

Do it in this order

Fragrance on top of an odour only makes a new smell. Remove the source first, then add scent last.

1. Find where the smell lives

2. Wash the fabrics

  1. Wash pet beds and throws every week on the warmest setting the label allows.
  2. Vacuum upholstery and rugs with a pet-hair attachment two or three times a week.
  3. Use an enzyme cleaner on accidents. Enzymes break down the cause of the smell; ordinary cleaners only mask it.

3. Clean the hard surfaces

4. Move the air

5. Only now, add a gentle scent

Once the source is gone, a light, clean scent finishes the room. Choose fresh or soft scents, keep the strength low, and place it where pets do not sleep.
