How to Get Rid of Smoke Smell in a Condo or Apartment (Even When It's Your Neighbour's)
Cigarette or cannabis smoke drifting in from next door, or a smell left by the last owner? How to find where it gets in, clear what's already there, and keep it out.
Smoke smell is one of the hardest smells to live with, because it does not stay in the air. It settles into walls, ceilings, fabrics and air vents, and it keeps coming back. Whether it comes from a neighbour or from the last person who lived in your unit, the fix has three parts: stop it getting in, clean what is already there, then freshen.
First, work out where it comes from
In condos and apartment buildings, smoke from another unit usually travels through small gaps you never notice:
- Under the front door from the hallway.
- Around electrical outlets and light switches on shared walls.
- Around pipes under the kitchen and bathroom sinks.
- Through bathroom and kitchen exhaust fans that share a shaft.
- Through baseboards and gaps where the wall meets the floor.
- From a balcony below, through an open window or sliding door.
A simple test: on a smoky evening, walk slowly around the unit with your nose close to outlets, baseboards and vents. The smell is strongest where it comes in.
Seal the gaps
- Add a door sweep to the bottom of the front door, and weatherstripping around the frame.
- Fit foam outlet gaskets behind the cover plates on shared walls. They cost very little and take minutes.
- Seal around pipes under sinks with caulk or expanding foam.
- Caulk baseboards along shared walls.
- Keep exhaust fans running at the times smoke usually arrives. A running fan pulls air out of your unit instead of letting it in.
If the smoke still gets in, talk to your property manager or condo board. Many buildings have smoking rules, and they can check the ventilation and seal shared areas.
Clean what's already there
If the smell has already settled in, especially in a unit someone smoked in before you, cleaning matters more than anything else.
- Wash the walls and ceilings with warm water and a mild degreasing cleaner. Smoke leaves a sticky film you cannot see.
- Wash everything fabric: curtains, cushion covers, throws and bedding. Steam-clean the sofa and rugs.
- Change the furnace or fan-coil filter, and ask about cleaning the ducts if the smell comes out of the vents.
- Repaint with an odour-blocking primer if the smell is in the walls. Ordinary paint alone will not hold it back.
Filter the air
A HEPA air purifier with an activated carbon filter helps with smoke. The HEPA part catches fine particles; the carbon is what takes out odour. Place it in the room where you notice the smell most, and change the filters on schedule.
Skip ozone generators unless a professional runs one in an empty home. Ozone can harm people and pets.
Only now, add a clean scent
Fragrance cannot cover smoke, and a strong sweet scent on top of smoke smells worse than either alone. Once the source is sealed and the surfaces are clean, a light, fresh scent makes the unit feel like yours again.
- Choose clean, airy scents: white tea, citrus, soft musk. Avoid heavy vanilla or incense right after a smoke problem.
- Use flameless scent. Reed diffusers are steady and safe in a condo. See Flameless Home Fragrance for Condos.
- Put one near the front door so the hallway smell stops at the threshold.
Quick answers
How do I stop my neighbour's smoke coming into my condo? Seal the gaps it travels through: a door sweep, foam gaskets behind outlets on shared walls, caulk around pipes and baseboards. Run your exhaust fans, and ask your property manager to check shared ventilation.
What gets rid of cigarette smell in an apartment? Washing walls and ceilings, washing or steam-cleaning fabrics, changing filters, and a HEPA air purifier with activated carbon. Repaint with an odour-blocking primer if the smell is in the walls.
Does air freshener get rid of smoke smell? No. It only adds a scent on top. Clean and seal first, then use a light scent.
Does cannabis smoke smell come out the same way? Yes. It travels through the same gaps and clings to the same surfaces, so the same steps work.
A clean finish once the smoke is gone: Thé Blanc, white tea and ginger, or L'Eau de Verre, bright citrus and sea breeze, both as flameless reed diffusers.
