How to Keep a Linen Closet Smelling Fresh

Sheets and towels should come out of the cupboard smelling like a good hotel. Drying, folding, airflow and a quiet scent.

In a good hotel, the sheets smell of nothing but clean air and something faintly lovely. A linen closet at home can do the same.

Why linen closets smell stale

The hotel method

  1. Dry completely, then let towels cool before folding. Warm towels hold moisture.
  2. Fold, don't cram. Leave a finger's width between stacks.
  3. Rotate: newly washed sets go to the bottom, so everything gets used and aired.
  4. Open the door once a week for an hour on dry days.

Add the scent last

Once the closet is dry and clean, add a scent that drifts through the stacks without touching them. The Wardrobe Pomander hangs from a hook or rests on a shelf; its wool sphere, infused with one of our hotel scents, stays enclosed in the gold lattice.

For linen, choose Thé Blanc (white tea, ginger and musk), the classic clean-hotel note, or Grand Foyer (bergamot, jasmine and amber) for a brighter, polished feel.

Quick answers

How do I make my linen closet smell fresh? Store only completely dry linens, leave air between stacks, and add an enclosed scent such as a pomander.

Why do towels smell musty in the cupboard? They were folded warm or slightly damp. Let them cool and dry fully first.

What scent do hotels use on linen? Clean, soft notes such as white tea and musk are the classic choice.
