How to Make Your Clothes Smell Good in the Closet (Without Spraying Them)
Clean clothes should come off the hanger smelling lovely, not of perfume. Storage habits and a quiet scent that never touches them.
Clothes pick up the smell of wherever they hang. Get the closet right and everything you take out of it smells clean and quietly lovely, without a drop of perfume on the fabric.
Store clothes the way boutiques do
- Only clean, fully dry clothes go in. Damp seams are the most common cause of a stale smell.
- Give hangers space. Air between garments keeps them fresh.
- Breathable covers (cotton, not plastic) for coats and suits you don't wear weekly.
- Fold knits on a shelf and leave a little room between stacks.
Why not spray your clothes?
Spraying perfume or room spray on fabric can leave marks on silk and light colours, and the scent fades within hours. It also mixes with the perfume you wear. A scent in the closet air gives clothes a soft, even note that doesn't compete.
Scent the air, not the fabric
The Wardrobe Pomander hangs from the rail on a satin ribbon. Inside its pierced gold sphere sits a wool sphere infused with one of our hotel scents. Air carries the scent through the closet, and clothes take on a faint, clean note over the following days. Nothing touches them.
- Hang it at one end of the rail, a hand's width from the nearest garment.
- For a long closet, use one pomander at each end.
- For folded knits, rest a second pomander on the shelf.
Which scent suits which wardrobe?
- Thé Blanc: white tea, ginger and soft musk. Our signature, and the cleanest closet you've ever opened.
- Grand Foyer: bergamot, jasmine and amber. Bright, polished, a little grand.
- Santal Vellum: creamy sandalwood, iris and cardamom. Warm and quiet.
- Ambre Safran: amber, orchid and sandalwood. Rich for evening wear and winter coats.
- Cèdre Noir: cedar, cardamom and leather. Made for suits, coats and leather goods.
- Velours Rose: rose, orange blossom and vanilla. Soft and romantic for lingerie and silk.
Quick answers
How do I make my clothes smell good in the closet? Store only clean, dry clothes with space between them, and hang a scent in the closet air, such as a pomander.
Can I put perfume on clothes to make them smell nice? It can mark fabric and fades fast; scenting the closet is gentler.
Why do clean clothes smell musty in the closet? Usually trapped moisture or no airflow. Dry everything fully and leave space between hangers.
