How to Refill a Reed Diffuser (and How Long a Refill Lasts)

A good reed diffuser should outlive its first bottle of scent. Here is how to refill one properly, how long each refill lasts, and the one mistake that ruins the scent.

A reed diffuser is one of the few things in a home that should get better with time, not worse. The glass stays, the ritual stays, and only the scent changes. Refilling it properly takes about five minutes.

What you need

• A reed diffuser refill (a blend that is already mixed with diffuser base, ready to pour)
• Fresh reeds
• A paper towel and a little warm water

If you are starting without a bottle, a 200 ml glass vessel, a pack of fibre reeds and a 100 ml refill make a complete reed diffuser.

How to refill it, step by step

1. Let the old scent finish. Mixing two scents in one bottle muddies both, so wait until the vessel is empty or nearly empty.
2. Rinse the vessel. Warm water and a drop of dish soap, then let it dry completely. Water left inside clouds the blend and weakens the throw.
3. Replace the reeds. This is the step most people skip. Reeds clog with dust and old fragrance, so used reeds carry the last scent into the new one and wick poorly. Fresh reeds with every refill.
4. Pour. Fill the vessel. A 200 ml bottle takes a 200 ml refill, or two 100 ml refills.
5. Add the reeds and flip them once. Let them soak for an hour, then turn them over so the wet ends face the room.

How long does a refill last?

About 60 days per 100 ml in an average room. Warm, dry air and a sunny spot use it faster; a cool hallway makes it last longer. A 200 ml refill is roughly four months.

How to make the scent stronger (or softer)

• Stronger: add more reeds, or flip them once a week. Each flip wets fresh reed and releases a wave of scent.
• Softer: use fewer reeds (five or six in a small room is plenty).
• Placement: near a doorway or a gentle air flow carries scent further. Keep it out of direct sun, which fades the fragrance.

Which refill works in which bottle?

A reed diffuser refill is fragrance already blended with diffuser base, so it belongs in a reed diffuser vessel only. Never pour a reed refill into a cold-air, waterless or HVAC diffuser. Those machines need undiluted fragrance oil and the base can clog them. For those, use a Cold-Air Concentrate instead.

Quick answers

Can I top up a half-full diffuser? Yes, with the same scent. With a different scent, finish the old one first.

Do fibre reeds last longer than rattan? Fibre reeds wick more evenly and clog more slowly, but they still collect dust. Change them with each refill either way.

Why can't I smell it anymore? Usually the reeds are clogged or your nose has adjusted. Flip the reeds, and if nothing changes, replace them. (We wrote a whole piece on why you can't smell your own home.)
