How to Make a Walk-In Closet or Dressing Room Smell Like a Boutique

Luxury boutiques plan scent as carefully as lighting. How to bring that to your walk-in closet or dressing room.

Walk into a fine boutique and the first thing you notice, before the clothes, is the air. It's calm, a little warm and quietly scented. A walk-in closet or dressing room can feel exactly the same.

Light, order, scent

Where to place scent

  1. At the entrance, so the scent greets you as you walk in.
  2. Near the hanging rail, so clothes take on a faint note.
  3. Never near a heat vent or a sunny window, which fades scent fast.

In a larger walk-in, use two pomanders: one by the door, one at the far end of the longest rail. The Wardrobe Pomander hangs from its satin ribbon on a rail or hook; inside, a wool sphere infused with one of our hotel scents never touches your clothes. A small reed diffuser such as Thé Blanc on a vanity or island adds a second layer.

Quick answers

How do I make my walk-in closet smell like a boutique? Choose one signature scent and place it at the entrance and by the main rail, away from vents and sun.

What scent do luxury boutiques use? Usually soft, clean or woody notes, such as white tea, sandalwood or cedar.

Will scent in my closet clash with my perfume? Not if it is soft and stays in the air rather than on your clothes.
