Your Scent Machine Came With Oil. What Should You Buy Next?
The bottle that came with your cold-air diffuser is almost empty. How to choose your first real refill: the right type of oil, the right size and a scent you will love.
Most scent machines arrive with a small starter bottle. It runs out quickly, usually just as you have started to love having a scented home or business. Here is how to choose what comes next.
The short answer
Buy a fragrance concentrate made for waterless (nebulizing) diffusers, in a size that matches how much you use, and choose a scent by family rather than by name. If your machine takes a refillable oil bottle, you are not locked into the brand that came in the box.
Step 1: Check what your machine takes
- Refillable oil bottle (screw-on or drop-in): you can use any good cold-air concentrate.
- Sealed cartridge: these cannot be refilled; you would need cartridges from the maker or a refillable machine.
- Water tank (ultrasonic): this is a different kind of diffuser. Concentrates are not for it.
Step 2: Choose a size
Your starter bottle tells you how fast you use oil. If it lasted:
- Two to four weeks: move to 500 ml.
- A week or two (business or large space): go straight to 1 litre.
- Over a month (one room, light use): 120 ml is fine while you explore scents.
Step 3: Choose a scent by family
If you liked the starter scent, note what it smelled like, then pick the family:
- Clean and calm (white tea, linen, musk): Thé Blanc
- Bright hotel lobby (citrus, white flowers): Grand Foyer
- Fresh and airy (lemon, sea breeze): L'Eau de Verre
- Warm wood and leather: Santal Vellum or Cèdre Noir
- Soft floral: Velours Rose
- Deep and resinous: Oud Nº1
Not sure? In Canada, try a 5 ml sample first.
Step 4: Switch cleanly
Let the starter bottle run out, wipe the bottle connection, then fit the new oil. If you are changing scent families, see how to switch scents.
Step 5: Set it and forget it
Once you know your monthly use, a standing order brings the next bottle before you run out.
Our concentrates are made for waterless (cold-air, nebulizing) diffusers that have a refillable oil bottle. They are not for water (ultrasonic) diffusers or sealed-cartridge machines.
Quick answers
Do I have to buy oil from the brand that made my scent machine? No, if it takes a refillable bottle. Any concentrate made for waterless diffusers will work.
What size refill should I buy for my scent machine? Base it on how long the starter bottle lasted. Most homes move to 500 ml; businesses to 1 litre.
Will a different oil damage my machine? A concentrate made for waterless diffusers will not. Avoid watered or carrier-heavy oils.
