Oud Nº1: What It Smells Like and Where to Use It

A deep, resinous oud wrapped in warm amber and sandalwood: the house signature. Where Oud Nº1 works best at home and in business, with placement tips.

Oud Nº1 is the scent the house is known for: a deep, resinous oud wrapped in warm amber and sandalwood, slow-burning and close. Set it down, and the room remembers.

If you are choosing a signature scent for your home or your business, this guide covers what Oud Nº1 smells like, how it behaves in a room, and where it earns its place.

What Oud Nº1 smells like

The opening is resin and smoke, dark and a little animalic the way real oud is, but rounded straight away by amber so it never turns harsh. Sandalwood gives the middle its creamy warmth. There is no sugar in it and no spice rack; it is wood, resin and glow. In a room it settles into a low, enveloping warmth that people walk into and go quiet for a second.

It is unisex and unmistakably evening, and it suits dark wood, velvet, brass, stone, candlelight and rooms that are used after dark.

How it behaves in a room

Our Oud Nº1 Reed Diffuser is blended by hand in Toronto and rested for a day before it is boxed, so the scent settles into the base and throws evenly from the first morning. The reeds release it slowly and continuously: no spray, no switch, no schedule. It is strongest within a few steps of the bottle and softens toward the edges of the room.

A reed diffuser is a presence rather than a blast, so placement matters more than strength. Put it where people naturally slow down and it will do most of the work for you.

Where to use Oud Nº1

1. The study or library. Oud, leather-bound books and a lamp: the room this scent was built for.

2. The living room in the evening. On a sideboard, away from the sofa, it turns a lounge into somewhere you dress for.

3. The entryway of a home that wants to make a statement. It is the most memorable first impression we make.

4. A dining room for occasions. At the far end from the table, it adds ceremony.

5. Hotel lobbies, private clubs, high-end brokerages, jewellers and galleries. When the brief is "expensive", this is the answer.

Where it is less suited

Oud Nº1 is rich, so several spaces want something lighter:

Placement tips that make a difference

  1. Choose a stable surface away from the main walking path. Fragrance oil can mark finished wood, so set the bottle on a tray, a stone coaster or a small dish.
  2. Keep it out of direct sun and strong drafts. Sunlight warms the oil and drafts strip it from the reeds too quickly.
  3. Give it breathing room. Two or three steps of open space around the bottle lets the scent move.
  4. Start with fewer reeds. You can always add more once you know how the room takes it.
  5. Flip the reeds once a week. It refreshes the top of the reeds and keeps the scent present without adding more oil.

Seasonal notes

Late autumn through winter is its season: long evenings, lamps on, the first cold nights. In summer, reserve it for an air-conditioned evening room or skip it until October.

For businesses

For a hotel, a private members' club, a jeweller, a gallery or a luxury brokerage, Oud Nº1 is the signature that says the price is correct. It is also the gift that has to impress. Trial it against Bergamot Obscura with our Commercial Packages.
