Why Does My Closet Smell Musty? Causes and Fixes

Musty closets are almost always about moisture and air. How to find the cause, fix it, and only then add a fresh scent.

A musty closet isn't a scent problem; it's an air problem. Covering it with fragrance only works for a day. Fix the cause first, then a lovely scent can do its job.

The usual causes

How to fix it

  1. Empty the closet and wipe every surface. Let it dry with the door open.
  2. Wash or air out anything that smells, outdoors if you can.
  3. Swap cardboard boxes for fabric or wooden ones.
  4. Control damp: a moisture absorber on the floor, or a small dehumidifier for a basement closet.
  5. Space the hangers and leave the door ajar overnight once a week.

If the smell comes back quickly or you see dark spots, it may be mould. Have it checked rather than covering it with scent.

Then add a quiet scent

Once the closet is dry and clean, a pomander keeps it smelling lovely. The Wardrobe Pomander holds a wool sphere infused with one of our hotel scents inside a pierced gold sphere, so the scent moves with the air and never touches your clothes. Thé Blanc (white tea and musk) reads as simply clean; Cèdre Noir (cedar and cardamom) suits a coat closet.
