How to Scent a Large Open Space: Lofts, Atriums and High Ceilings

Large, tall, open spaces swallow scent. Here is how to make a loft, atrium, warehouse-style store or event floor smell consistent without overpowering anyone.

Tall ceilings, open floors and big volumes are beautiful, and they are the hardest spaces to scent. Fragrance rises, spreads thin and gets carried off by doors and air handling. Done well, the result is a space that smells the same from the front door to the back wall.

The short answer

Use more output than the floor area suggests, place units where air already moves, and choose a scent with good projection. For very large volumes, one machine connected to the HVAC usually beats several small units.

Why big spaces are different

Coverage figures are quoted in square feet, but scent fills cubic space. A 2,000 sq ft loft with a 6 metre ceiling holds about twice the air of the same floor with a standard ceiling. Plan output by volume, not footprint.

Step 1: Map the airflow

Walk the space with the HVAC running. Feel where supply air comes in, where it returns and where doors open. Scent placed upstream of moving air travels; scent placed in a dead corner sits there.

Step 2: Choose your setup

Step 3: Place for the first ten seconds

Whatever else you do, the entrance should be clearly scented. People decide how a place feels before they reach the middle of it.

Step 4: Set and adjust

Start mid-range, run it for three days, then adjust. In tall spaces, longer misting with longer pauses usually spreads better than constant low output.

Scents that carry in big volumes

Fresh, bright and mineral scents project further than heavy, sweet ones.

Heavier woods like Oud Nº1 work in large spaces at lower settings, as a warm signature.

How much oil to plan for

Large open spaces are the heaviest users. Many run through a litre every one to two months. Use our 1 litre guide to estimate, and consider standing orders so you never run dry before an event.

Our concentrates are made for waterless (cold-air, nebulizing) diffusers that have a refillable oil bottle. They are not for water (ultrasonic) diffusers or sealed-cartridge machines.

Quick answers

How do you scent a room with high ceilings? Plan output by volume, place units near moving air, and use a fresh scent with good projection.

Can one diffuser scent a warehouse-style store? Only a large unit or an HVAC-connected one, and usually with a second unit at the entrance.

Why does my large space barely smell? Usually too little output for the volume, a unit in a dead corner, or doors pulling scent out.
