Can I Get the Same Scent for My Scent Machine, Reed Diffusers and Closet?
Yes, and it is the easiest way to make a home feel composed. Which scents come in which formats, how each one smells, and how to set up one signature scent room by room.
Short answer: Yes. Every Velour and Vellum house scent is made both as a Cold-Air Concentrate for scent machines and as a Reed Diffuser Refill, with a matching reed diffuser in 200 ml and 100 ml travel sizes, and the six hotel scents (Thé Blanc, Grand Foyer, Santal Vellum, Ambre Safran, Cèdre Noir and Velours Rose) also come for The Wardrobe Pomander and as a 30 ml Scent Bottle. The one rule: buy the right bottle for each format. Concentrates go in machines, refills go on reeds.
Why carry one scent through the house
When the hallway, the living room and the closet share a scent, a home feels composed rather than decorated. Guests notice it as a single impression, and you notice it in the small moments: opening a wardrobe and meeting the same air as the entry.
Each format also has a job the others cannot do well:
- A scent machine covers the large shared spaces evenly, on a schedule you set.
- Reed diffusers hold the rooms the machine does not reach: an upstairs bedroom, a bathroom, a home office behind a closed door.
- A pomander scents a closet or drawer from the inside, close to clothes and linens, without touching them.
One signature scent is not the only good approach. Some people prefer a different scent for each room or season, and our guide to building a home fragrance wardrobe makes that case well. A middle path works too: one signature for the shared spaces, with a softer companion in the bedroom.
Which scents come in which formats
The six hotel scents (Thé Blanc, Grand Foyer, Santal Vellum, Ambre Safran, Cèdre Noir, Velours Rose) come in every format we make:
| Format | What it is for |
|---|---|
| Cold-Air Concentrate (120 ml, 500 ml, 1 L) | Cold-air (nebulizing), HVAC and other waterless scent machines |
| Reed diffuser, 200 ml | A living room, entry or bedroom |
| Travel reed diffuser, 100 ml | A powder room, desk, guest room or weekend bag |
| Reed Diffuser Refill (100 ml to 1 L) | Refilling any reed diffuser vessel |
| Wardrobe Pomander and Scent Spheres | Closets, drawers, linen cupboards and suitcases |
| Scent Bottle, 30 ml | Weeks in a scent machine, or a first bottle before a full size |
| 5 ml sample (Canada only) | Smelling it in your own space before you commit |
Our other eight scents (Oud Nº1, Fig & Cashmere, L'Eau de Verre, Vellum Amour, Vellum & Hide, Bergamot Obscura, Golden Hour and Midnight Vellum) come as a Cold-Air Concentrate, a 200 ml reed diffuser, a 100 ml travel reed diffuser and a Reed Diffuser Refill. Golden Hour and Midnight Vellum concentrates come in 30 ml, 50 ml and 100 ml.
Will it smell exactly the same in each format?
It is the same scent, delivered three different ways, and each delivery shows it a little differently. That is worth knowing before you set up a room.
- In a scent machine, the concentrate is broken into a fine, dry mist and carried through the air. You meet the whole composition at once, and the strength is whatever your schedule makes it.
- On reeds, the fragrance rises slowly through the fibre and evaporates from the tips. It is steadier and quieter, strongest near the vessel and softer across the room.
- In a pomander, a wool sphere infused with the scent releases it into an enclosed space. It is the most intimate of the three: you notice it when the closet door opens and on the clothes you take out.
Expect a family resemblance rather than a carbon copy. The notes are the same; the volume and the distance are what change.
A simple setup, room by room
Take Santal Vellum (sandalwood, cardamom, iris, violet, leather, cedar, musk) as an example:
- Main floor or open-plan living: the Cold-Air Concentrate — Santal Vellum in a cold-air (nebulizing) diffuser. If you do not yet own one, the Scent System · Suite is sized for homes and condos up to about 1,500 sq ft and ships filled with the concentrate you choose.
- An upstairs bedroom or a room behind a closed door: the Santal Vellum Reed Diffuser, 200 ml.
- A powder room or a desk: the Santal Vellum Travel Reed Diffuser, 100 ml.
- The closet: The Wardrobe Pomander in Santal Vellum, with Scent Spheres to replace the sphere when the scent softens.
- When the reeds run low: the Reed Diffuser Refill — Santal Vellum, poured into the vessel you already own.

Keep the intensity in balance
Using one scent everywhere makes it easier to overdo, because it all adds up.
- Do not stack formats in one room. If the machine already reaches the living room, put the reed diffuser somewhere it does not.
- Lower the machine when you add reeds. Drop the scent machine one step for a week, then adjust.
- Start reeds with fewer sticks. Add more after a few days if a room needs it. Our guide to what size reed diffuser you need has reed counts by room.
- Test with fresh air. Your nose adapts to a scent it meets all day. Step outside for a few minutes and walk back in to judge it honestly. See why you can't smell your own home.
One concentrate, two jobs
If you prefer to make your own reed diffusers, the concentrate can do both jobs. Mix 3 parts of our Reed Diffuser Base with 1 part Cold-Air Concentrate, let it rest 24 hours, then add reeds. The trade-off is simple: a ready-to-pour refill takes a minute and needs no measuring, while mixing your own lets one bottle cover the machine and the reeds. Our guide to making a reed diffuser the clean way walks through it.
Mistakes to avoid
- Pouring a reed diffuser refill into the machine. Refills are for reed diffusers only and can block the atomiser. Scent machines take Cold-Air Concentrate. See Cold-Air Concentrate or Reed Diffuser Refill.
- Putting concentrate straight onto reeds. On its own it is too strong to travel well. Use the Reed Diffuser Base.
- Mixing two scents in one machine to bridge rooms. Keep one scent per bottle and switch cleanly when you change.
- Choosing your signature from one sniff. Live with it for a few days first.

Frequently asked questions
Can I buy the same scent as a diffuser oil and a reed diffuser? Yes. Every Velour and Vellum scent comes as a Cold-Air Concentrate for scent machines and as a reed diffuser and Reed Diffuser Refill, so the same scent can run in your machine and sit on your shelf.
Can I use one bottle for both my scent machine and my reed diffuser? Only the concentrate can do both, and only if you mix it with Reed Diffuser Base for the reeds (3 parts base to 1 part oil, rested 24 hours). A reed diffuser refill must never go in a scent machine.
Which Velour and Vellum scents come in every format? The six hotel scents: Thé Blanc, Grand Foyer, Santal Vellum, Ambre Safran, Cèdre Noir and Velours Rose. They come as a concentrate, reed diffusers, refill, Wardrobe Pomander spheres, a 30 ml Scent Bottle and a 5 ml sample.
Will a reed diffuser smell as strong as my scent machine? Usually not. Reeds release scent slowly and are strongest near the vessel, while a machine spreads it evenly across a larger space. That is why reeds suit the rooms a machine does not reach.
Is it too much to use the same scent in every room? Not if you keep each format gentle. Avoid putting a machine and a reed diffuser in the same room, start reeds with fewer sticks, and keep the closet to a pomander.
Velour and Vellum reed diffusers and refills are blended by hand in Toronto; Cold-Air Concentrates are selected and bottled in Toronto. All are IFRA-compliant and made without phthalates, parabens or formaldehyde, and they ship across Canada and the US.
