How to Choose a Wedding Scent and Send Guests Home With It
Choose one scent, test it beside your flowers, use it where guests linger, then give each guest a small bottle of it as their favour. A step-by-step guide with timing.
To choose a wedding scent and send guests home with it, pick one scent that suits your season, venue and flowers, use it in the spaces guests remember most (the arrival, the ceremony and the reception), then give each guest a small bottle of the same scent as their favour, tagged with your names and date. When they open it at home weeks later, it brings the day straight back. The steps below cover choosing the scent, testing it, using it on the day and turning it into a favour, with the timing for each.
Step 1: Choose one scent, not several
A wedding scent works because it is consistent. Guests walk into the same scent at the welcome, sit in it during the ceremony and dance in it at the reception, so it becomes "the smell of your wedding". Several different scents in different rooms blur together and nothing sticks.
Start with how you want the day to feel:
- Fresh and calm: Thé Blanc, our signature scent (white tea, aloe, ginger, cedarwood, a little vanilla and musk), suits almost any venue and season, and sits quietly beside flowers.
- Bright and welcoming: Grand Foyer (bergamot, lemon, white jasmine, water lily, soft amber, white musk) suits daytime and spring and summer weddings.
- Romantic and soft: Velours Rose (mandarin, rose, jasmine, orange blossom, vanilla, tonka) or Vellum Amour (soft peach, mimosa, rose petals, sandalwood, warm amber).
- Warm and evening: Santal Vellum (sandalwood, cardamom, iris, leather, cedar) or Ambre Safran (bergamot, jasmine, orchid, ambergris, sandalwood, cedar) suit fall and winter receptions.
All of them are from our Hotel Collection of premium fragrance oils, inspired by the world's great hotels. For a deeper guide to choosing, see how to choose a signature wedding scent.
Step 2: Test it properly before you commit
Smelling a scent once in a shop is not enough. Live with it for a few days.
- Try several side by side. The Complete Hotel Edit has six of our hotel scents in small vials, so you can compare them at home without committing to a full size.
- Smell it on different days and at different times. A scent you love at 10 a.m. may feel different at 9 p.m.
- Smell it near your flowers. Ask your florist which blooms you are using. Fresh, soft scents sit well beside heavily scented flowers; warmer scents suit evenings and greenery.
- Ask your partner. It is a scent for both of you, and you will both be smelling it for years.
Step 3: Use it where guests will remember it
On the day, the scent belongs where guests arrive and where they linger, not everywhere at full strength:
- The arrival (entrance, coat check, welcome table) sets the first impression.
- The ceremony space should be soft; guests are seated close together.
- The reception and lounge areas carry the evening.
- Washrooms are a small touch guests notice.
- Keep dining tables light, and leave a quiet, unscented corner for anyone sensitive to fragrance.
If you would like this handled for you, our wedding and event scenting service plans every space, sets up before guests arrive and collects everything afterwards. Our guide to wedding and event scenting explains how venues are scented.
Step 4: Turn the scent into the favour
This is the step that makes the scent last beyond the night. Each guest takes home a small bottle of the scent they spent the evening in.
Our scent favours are a 30 ml amber glass bottle, capped so it travels safely in a pocket or handbag, with three black reeds tied on the outside with satin ribbon and a printed tag with your names and date. At home, guests uncap the bottle, slip the reeds in and have a small reed diffuser of your wedding scent. Favours are blended by hand in Toronto, in a set of 50 or a set of 100, and can also be added to an event-scenting booking.
Wording ideas for the tag or a small table card:
- "The scent of our day, for your home."
- "Uncap, add the reeds, and remember the night."
- "With love and thanks, [names], [date]."
Step 5: Give the closest people something more
For your wedding party and parents, a larger version of the same scent feels special: a full reed diffuser for each set of parents, or a gift for each bridesmaid. Our guide to bridesmaid and bridal party gifts has more ideas. And keep a bottle for yourselves: the same scent on your first anniversary is a lovely way to bring the day back.

Quick answers
How do I choose a scent for my wedding? Start with how you want the day to feel, test two or three scents at home over several days, check them beside your flowers, and choose one scent for the whole event.
Can wedding guests take the wedding scent home? Yes. A scent favour is a small bottle of the scent used at the wedding. Velour and Vellum's favours are a capped 30 ml amber bottle with three black reeds and a printed tag, ready to become a small reed diffuser at home.
Should the wedding scent match the favours? Ideally, yes. Using the same scent in the room and in the favour is what makes the favour bring the day back.
What is the best scent for a wedding? There is no single best, but a fresh, soft scent suits the most venues and guests. Thé Blanc, Velour and Vellum's signature white tea scent, is a popular choice because it sits quietly beside flowers.
How early should I order wedding scent favours? At least six weeks before the wedding. We send a proof within two business days and ship two to three weeks after approval, within Canada.
